How to Enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10

I love Windows Photo Viewer so much that I made it my default image viewing app in my then Windows 7 and XP. Then Upgrading to Windows 8, 8.1 and 10, I noticed that the Windows photo viewer wasn’t there, so I was stuck with photos instead. (Don’t get me wrong, Windows 8 and 10 Photos app is great). It certainly has some cool new features, and the ability to edit and enhance your images with a couple of clicks. But it just wasn’t the old Windows Photo Viewer which I love and miss so much. So I sourced out on how to Enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 and was successful.

If you upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 or 8.1, you must’ve noticed that the Windows Photo Viewer which is the default image viewing app in the previous versions of Windows is missing, and to get it back, there is what to do, it is quite easy as ABC.

1.    Download this txt NotePad file and name it anything you want, but it must have a .reg file extension. For instance, I named mine “Windows 10 Photo Viewer.reg”

2.    Once you have downloaded the file, place it on your desktop and double click on it.

3.    It will ask you if you wish to add this registry file to your PC, simply and yes and confirm your answer.

4.    Now that the registry file has been added to your PC, right-click on any image file on your PC, then choose to open with Photo Viewer.

5.    Alternatively, you can open Control Panel and then go to Default Programs >>> Set Default Programs. Find Windows Photo Viewer in the list of programs, click it, and choose Set this program as default.

This will set the Windows Photo Viewer as the default program for all file types it can open by default.

So that is how to  Enable Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10, remember, it is imperative that you save the txt file you downloaded in step 1 above with .reg
