WILL THEY WIN ? DPC, ID elect Yul Edochie, Ndife as gubernatorial candidates

Hehehe……The Democratic Peoples Congress (DPC) and the the Independent Democratic (ID) have elected Yul Edochie and Franklin Ndife, respectively as candidates of the party for the November 18 governorship election in AnamBrra State.

While Edochie, a known movie actor was elected by a 140-man delegate of the party, Ndife, a farmer was elected by 243 delegates, all through voice votes conducted by officials of the party and monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Both men stood for the elections as sole aspirants of the party.
Speaking separately in their acceptance speeches, both candidates who coincidentally are 35 years in age, pledged to stamp out poverty and also ensure youth empowerment if they were elected as governor of the state.
Ndife who was announced winner of the gubernatorial primary by the Cross River State chairman of ID, Mr Sunday Michael said that his major interest would be to empower youths as older politicians in the state had through their policies impoverished women and children.
The national chairman of ID, Chief Edozie Madu who congratulated Ndife on his emergence said it was time for the youths to take over governance.

He said the party met and agreed that it would field a young candidate who would be acceptable to a larger population of the state, and that it also agreed that the youth will run with a female deputy as a way of showing its concern for the plight of women in the society.
Edochie on the other hand has not made disclosures over who his running mate for the election would be.

NA WA ….Rochas Okorocha bans Keke in Owerri

Hehehe…….Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has said tricycle operators (Keke driver) in Imo State will cease to operate in designated parts of Owerri, the State Capital as from Tuesday, September 5, 2017.
According to him, Keke operators would no longer be expected to operate along the major roads of Douglas, Wetheral, Bank Road, Orlu Road and other designated roads.

Only taxis will now be operating in the Capital City.
He stated this while sharing about 2000 Passat Wagon Vehicles to Keke drivers to enable them comply with the directive. Balloting was conducted at the Hero’s Square for the beneficiaries to emerge.
Okorocha further said the second batch of beneficiaries will get theirs in October while the third batch will have theirs own in December 2017.
Addressing the Keke Operators, Okorocha said, “Few years ago when the Keke people gave me a very resounding support, I promised you people that I will change you from three legged to four legged and for that reason, today marks the beginning of movement from tricycle to full car.

“Now the government has made provision for 2,000 taxis to enable all of you to have one taxi each. This is done to give you comfort and make your life prosperous. I would not have been happy if I finish this government without fulfilling my promise.
“For purpose of clarity this is government empowerment scheme to empower the masses, to reduce pain in your families and to bring comfort. Keke has served us well in Imo State and I want to thank you all for serving us well but as Imo State is developing and getting better with good roads and a lot of infrastructural developments, Keke can no longer be the appropriate means of transport within the Owerri City, this is why we are moving from Keke to a full car.
“Only a few days ago, you heard the story about EKEUKWU MARKET, and few months ago you heard the At-tack on the Urban Renewal and few years ago you heard about the free education and the At-tack by the elite, you will agree with me my people that I have come to rescue Imo State.
“In all these, I, Rochas Okorocha your governor, has no direct or indirect benefit from my free education or widening the road or even relocating the EKEUKWU but I see that in the next ten years Imo will appreciate what I have done for them”.

“I give you these cars without subjecting you to pay for forms, or cost of transportation or any another fee, I release it free of charge, I am doing this for God’s sake that the poor people may smile.
“I want all of you to understand that I am making the highest sacrifice that it may be well with my people. I have tried to make Imo much better than I met it, as I struggle painfully, having sleepless nights to make the life of my people better, I want you to reciprocate by joining me in the fight to rescue the state totally from the hands of scavengers ravaging the state over the years.”‎
On last Saturday’s demolition of Ekewku market, he said: “I relocated Ekeukwu to stop crime in the area and clean the city of dirt so that light can come in but the Sadducees and Pharisees cashed in and changed the narrative.

“Only yesterday, they said they want to pay condolence over a child that was shot, let me tell you, neither the Police nor any government official shot any G.un and till today nobody has shown where the blood of that child was but this happened along Mbaise road not even on Douglas Road” he stressed.

Nigeria vs Cameroon: Five Lions Super Eagles should be wary of

Cameroon's forward Vincent Aboubakar celeBrrates after scoring the team's second goal during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations final football match between Egypt and Cameroon at the Stade de l'Amitie Sino-Gabonaise in Libreville on February 5, 2017. / AFP PHOTO / ISSOUF SANOGO

This evening in Uyo, it will be a top-of-the-table clash when the Super Eagles of Nigeria take on reigning African Champions, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, in a World Cup qualifier, at the ‘nest of champions.’ The game will be the first leg of a double header against the Cameroonians in just four days, as the return leg comes up in Yaoundé, next Monday.

The importance of the task ahead for the Nigerian team cannot be over emphasized as they know that four points out of a possible six will see them with one foot in Russia for next year’s World Cup. Nigeria currently tops the group with six points, followed by Cameroon with two points, and Algeria and Zambia with one point each.

Winning this game will provide a clear 7-point lead serving as a huge morale booster for the Super Eagles’ reverse leg. Anything short of this will be a huge setback as it will quickly take away the team’s current position of power as well as the team’s qualification fate.

We have a full house already in Uyo and the ‘big boys’ are also very ready and amped for this fixture. The likes of Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo and Victor Moses, who were not part of the defeat to South Africa in the AFCON qualifiers, are here for this one, while Hapoel Be’er Sheva hit-man, Tony Nwakaeme is also in the team after getting his first call-up. From all indications, the Super Eagles are ready for the Indomitable Lions but let’s take a look at our common history.

We all know the Cameroonians and their r0bust style of football. We’ve come up against them 20 times and in those 20 games, we have won 10, lost four and drawn six. We might have a winning record against them, but in competitive games, their victories against us have been more impactful. They beat the Eagles in two AFCON finals and drew a third one before going on to win on penalties.

The lions stopped Nigeria from qualifying for the Italia 90 World Cup in a 1-0 final qualifier in Yaoundé. However, that has been the only victory over the Super Eagles in four World Cup qualifiers, Nigeria has two victories and the other game ended in a draw. This new crop of Indomitable Lions were not considered as heavyweights on the continent a year ago, but since their triumph at this year’s AFCON in Gabon, they cannot be ignored. They have some very talented and key players that can damage and dampen the Nigerian mood if they are allowed to flourish. Here are five of them.

Christian Bassogog
The 21-year-old who plays for Chinese side, Henan Jianye, emerged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, which the Indomitable Lions won. He started all six games at the tournament scoring in the semi-final as the Indomitable Lions beat Ghana 2-0. He is a very pacy player who likes to run at defenders and enjoys taking them on. He dribbles very well and has an eye for the killer pass and this is a player that the Super Eagles’ defence must keep a close eye on, because a single lapse in concentration is all he needs to punish. His sterling performances at the AFCON earned him a big money move to China, and he will be familiar with some of our players based there.

Benjamin Moukandjo
This is another forward player that the Super Eagles need to be wary of. He scored 13 goals in 25 appearances for Lorient last season. Though they were relegated from the top flight, he earned himself a move to China, where he has already scored four goals in five matches and also produced three assists for his Jiangsu Suning FC in the Chinese Super League. He is the captain of the team and also very influential with his goals and assists for them, so, if the Super Eagles can keep him quiet, it can destroy the morale of his team mates who look up to him. Benjamin scored Cameroon’s equalizer in the 1-1 draw away at Algeria and should be closely monitored by our defenders

Jean-Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
This Hamburg-born Cameroonian international is not your regular type of winger. He stands at 6ft 2in, so his long purposeful stride and preference for his right foot makes him more of an inside forward. He is a very flexible player, comfortable on either flank or through the middle. His work-rate as well is fantastic, he is a very purposeful and powerful dribbler and a composed finisher. He drew the ire of Cameroonians when he chose to stay with his then club, Schalke 04 and refused to take part in the AFCON, which makes his inclusion in this team polarizing for fans. He currently plies his trade in the EPL for Stoke City.

Vincent Aboubakar
He is just 25 years old, but it seems like he’s been around for a long time because he broke into world consciousness as a teenager. He has already been to two World Cups and is hoping to go for a third one in Russia. He has incredible athleticism, often overpowering defenders, but also has the technical ability to match. Intelligent hold up play and neat footwork compliment his natural strength, and he is more than capable in front of goal. Aboubakar has all the attributes of a complete striker, and is a real handful for defenders, his power makes him appear bigger than he is and his strength means that he is an intimidating presence. This is one man that will make sure our defenders earn their keep as he also boasts impressive footwork and can embarrass them with his close control and pacey dribbling if not stuck to like glue.

Fabrice Ondoa
This 21-year-old shot stopper was named the best goalkeeper at this year’s AFCON and has shown that he is going to be around for a long time. He joined Barcelona as a 13-year-old, progressing through the youth system before being promoted to the B team in 2014. It’s a testament to his quality then that he’s essentially been the Cameroon national number one since his debut in August 2014, having taken over the mantle from Carlos Kameni and he’s established himself as a strong communicator, not afraid of bossing around his backline, despite oftentimes being 5 or 6 years younger. He has more than 30 caps for his country and this experience will come in handy for him. He is going to be the last line of defence against the Super Eagles and our strikers must be very ready to deflate his confidence with well-placed and composed finishes.

Oil-producing communities’ rulers suspend Diete-Spiff

King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff

The Traditional Rulers of Oil Mineral Producing Communities of Nigeria (TROMPCON) has indefinitely suspended the Amayanabo of Twon-Brrass, Bayelsa State, King Alfred Diete-Spiff.

The body’s national chairman, Owong Effiong Bassey Archianga, at a press briefing yesterday in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State, said the embattled monarch was creating confusion by exhibiting an anti-establishment conduct following his remarks recently in a national daily (not The Guardian).

TROMPCON cautioned the suspended traditional ruler against using the title of national patron pending his readmission. His words: “ TROMPCON Observes with dismay the conscious but deplorable attempt by HRM King Alfred Diete-Spiff to create unwarranted confusion in the body by embarking on anti-TROMPCON activities by denigrating the highly revered stool of the Oba of Benin using the name of TROMPCON. At no time or forum, did TROMPCON mandate or authorise HRM King Diete-Spiff to go fishing for a new national chairman. There was absolutely no need for such venture because the succession mechanism in the association is self-regulatory.”

In a swift reaction, Diete-Spiff said his purported suspension was a fluke, saying the body remains his Brrain-child and will continue to work for its progress.

Meanwhile, the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) yesterday cleared the air and distanced Oba Ewuare II from any leadership crisis in TROMPCOM.A statement by the monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Desmond Agbama, expressed shock that Owong Bassey was claiming the chairmanship of the body after Diete-Spiff and other executive members had pleaded with the Oba to chair the association for the next two years.

At sallah, government restricts movement in north-east

IBrrahim Gaidam

• Buhari urges stronger ties among Nigerians
• Saraki predicts economic rebound, Dogara seeks unity
• Don’t let extremists destroy ISl.am, Atiku warns Muslims

Movement of people and vehicles in the insurgency-ravaged Borno and Yobe states of the north-east has been restricted to protect lives and property during the Eid-el-Kabir celeBrration.

The Spokesman of the Borno Police Command, Victor Isuku, who announced the restriction yesterday explained, the action was taken to protect lives and property in the Maiduguri metropolis and the liberated communities.

“The restrictions, though regrettable, will include vehicles, tricycle, bicycles and animals, except those on essential duties. Muslim faithful are advised to pray for the sallah at the respective prayer grounds close to homes and ensure they go early enough for security screening.

“This is to avoid rush when prayers are about to commence, thereby compromising the emplaced security measures. Parents who go to prayer grounds with their children are advised to watch and take proper care of them so as to avert the incidents of missing ones,” Isuku said in a statement.

The police advised youths not to carry any dangerous weap0ns to the praying grounds and recreational centres. Isuku warned that any person found with such weap0ns, would be arrested and prosecuted in a court of law. He urged members of the general public to be security conscious and law-abiding.

In Yobe State, Governor IBrrahim
Gaidam restricted the movement of vehicles from 10:00 p.m. yesterday till 11:00 a.m. today, Friday. In a statement yesterday in Damaturu, the Director of Press Affairs to the governor, Abdullahi Bego said: “The public is also advised that no vehicle, except those on official duty and with valid security clearance, will be allowed in or around Eid-prayer grounds.”

Bego said the state government adopted the measure in consultation with the heads of security and law enforcement agencies to ensure smooth, secure and hitch-free prayers today. He advised members of the general public to fully cooperate with the security agents.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to jettison their prejudices and strengthen the bonds of friendship and unity so as to keep the country together. President Buhari in his message to Nigerians on the occasion of the Eid-El-Kabir celeBrration thanked “all Nigerians who prayed for my recovery and have continued to extend their goodwill and support after my return to the country. Indeed your fervent and sincere prayers, which cut across religion, political and ethnic divides, has energised me to re-dedicate myself and this administration to the task of building a great Nigeria.”

He added : “On the joyous occasion of this year’s Eid-El-Kabir celeBrration, I appeal to all Nigerians to rise against the odds, keep our prejudices aside and strengthen the bonds of friendship and unity to keep our country together.”

Other eminent Nigerians, including the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, admonished Muslim faithful to work tirelessly for a united and virile Nigeria.

Saraki predicted that the celeBrration of Eid-El-Kabir and jummat on the same day (Friday) means economic rebound and assurance of double blessings to Muslim faithful across the country.

He said he had no doubt that this year would witness the rebound of the nation’s economy and that the positive effects would trickle down to individual homes and help citizens to realise their aspirations.

Saraki’s message was contained in a statement by Yusuph Olaniyonu, his special adviser on media and publicity yesterday in Abuja. He called on all Nigerians, irrespective of religion, to use the occasion to pray and rededicate themselves to the dreams of building a strong, united and economically and politically stable country.

He urged all Nigerians to be law-abiding and support the administration in its bid to tackle insecurity, unemployment, corruption and underperforming economy.

In his sallah message, Dogara said Nigeria could only fulfill its great potential as a nation if the citizens continue to foster unity, peace, security and stability as well as show greater respect and love for one another.

“This is a moment for sober reflections; I enjoin you to use the period to uphold the spiritual benefit of the celeBrration by extending a hand of friendship and solidarity across all divides and imbibing the spirit of sacrifice and obedience to the higher authority as exemplified by Prophet IBrrahim and upheld by Prophet Muhammed,” he said.

The speaker reiterated his call for sustained prayers for the leadership of the country at all levels. “This is an opportunity for us to reflect and pray for our nation; pray for our dear president for God’s guidance and good health and pray for all those in leadership positions so that God in his infinite mercy will continue to guide them as they steer the affairs of the country.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar enjoined the Muslim faithful to join hands in tackling the nefarious activities of extremists bent on destroying the humane virtues of ISl.am.In his sallah message to Muslims, Atiku advised Muslims to reclaim the religion which is being Hi.jacked by violent extremists whose atrocities portray ISl.am in bad light.

The Wazirin Adamawa expressed sadness that the activities of the Boko Haram ISl.amist insurgency group have economically destroyed the north, in particular the north-east, and disrupted its social life.

“As a citizen of the north-east, I have a firsthand experience of the impact of Terr0rism on our people’s daily lives,” he said.He called for rigorous scrutiny and vigilance to guard against the influence of extremism, including exposing innocent students and followers to their virulent ideas.

Atiku advised parents to be wary of letting their children follow any preacher and thereby, falling victims of indoctrination, warning that poisonous ideas are as destructive as a B0mb.

While wishing Muslim leaders a happy and hitch-free celeBrration, the former vice president said they should show increased commitment to peaceful coexistence and tolerance in line with the demands of the Muslim faith and Nigeria’s diversity.

According to him, love and peace should not only be preached, but must also be put into practice for the sake of sustaining the peace in the land. The former vice president advised Nigerians to eschew religious bigotry, and condemned politicians who use ethnic and religious sentiments to gain power.

According to him, identity politics based on religious loyalties rather than competence and commitment to unity is a threat to the nation’s democracy and progress.

At Ekiti judicial panel, witness says Coscharis supplied N1.3b vehicles verbally

A Representative of Coscharis Motors, Justin Ngele, yesterday told the Judicial Panel of Inquiry pr0bing the administration of former Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State that his organisation supplied 156 vehicles worth N1,284,159,000 based on oral agreement.

Led by the counsel to the automobile firm, Peter Jiya, he said the company Exe.cuted the deal on trust. He added that the state government later issued a letter of award for purchase of additional 59 units of vehicles which were equally supplied.

Ngele said of the 235 vehicles supplied between 2013 and 2014, N1.449 billion was paid, leaving behind a balance of N459 million. But a witness from the Ministry of Local Government, Samuel Akinjide in his statement on oath, alleged that the ministry received an invoice of N1,284,159,000 for the financing of 156 Ford Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) for traditional rulers in the state.

He also claimed that the then Commissioner for Finance, Vincent Kolawole, had taken delivery of the vehicles before the official communication. Akinjide averred that “Coscharis Motors on May 2, 2014 requested for payment in respect of 235 vehicles instead of the 156 units the ministry was directed to purchase.

“By this letter, there is no evidence that Coscharis Motors paid taxes on the vehicles. The automobiles were distributed without the input of the ministry.”

He continued: “The local councils were to settle the debt on equal basis even though they did not solicit for it.“The General Administration Department (GAD) and the Ministry of Finance have been contacted but they all claimed ignorance of the purchase.”Consequently, the panel adjourned sitting till September 8 to enable the automobile company tender original documents to back its claim.

Mimiko denies leaving N220b debt for Akeredolu

OluseG.un Mimiko

• I left over N20b in state coffers

Ex-governor OluseG.un Mimiko of Ondo State has debunked the claims by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu that his administration inherited N220 billion debt.In a statement by his former Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, Mimiko disclosed that he left over N20 billion in the state coffers.

Akeredolu, had while inaugurating his new commissioners on Wednesday, said he inherited “a staggering debt totaling N220, 588,125,731.00.”He quoted the figures to include internal and external debts, unpaid salaries and allowances, state pension liabilities and gratuities.

Akeredolu also refuted Mimiko’s claim that he left over N20 billion in the state coffers even before the expiration of his two-term tenure on February 24, 2017, which he said took six months for a counter-claim.

According to Akeredolu, the liquid assets that he met from all banks balances, fixed deposits, balance in bond, portfolio management account and Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) totaled N9, 956,594,630.36.

But Mimiko said, without mincing words: “We are concerned by the figures in the speech and feel obliged to put the records straight.“For the avoidance of doubt, our administration left about N20 billion in the coffers of the state at its exit on February 2017. This include: N7.37 billion in the current account, N7.53 billion in fixed deposit; N1.2 billion in the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) account, $346,000 and 443,000 Euro in the domiciliary account and N825 million Sure-P fund in the local government account.”

He further explained that most of the money, which came late during his tenure was purposed to offset the salary arrears owed to the workers, before the then accountant general disappeared.

“On the figures listed as external debt, it is necessary to state the following. Our administration did not incur any foreign debt in all its eight years. Also, the external debt stock as at February 2017 was $49, 958,268.49, which (if translated at one $ = N305) is N15.23 billion.

“All of this external debt stock was inherited from previous administrations. Again, we did not contract any external loan for all of our eight years. We are aware of the fact that government is a continuum, we continued to service the debts, some of which spanned over 20 years,” he said.

He added that internal debt profile was at N53.159 billion, comprising mainly of salary bailout loan of N13.76 billion, Excess Crude Account loan of N9.79 billion, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) restructuring Federal Government of Nigeria Bond N4.13 billion, CBN budget support N7.5 billion and Ondo State 7-Year bond of N17.6 billion.

The former governor pointed out that, of all the listed indebtedness, his government only directly incurred the seven-year bond to build major infrastructure across the state.

He urged the people and Akeredolu to visit the Debt Management Office and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) for the true debt status of the state.

Eagles declare war on Lions as Akwa Ibom promises $10,000 per goal

Super Eagles

• Players get $30,000 for goals against Algeria
The game is finally here. This is the day many Nigerians and Cameroonians have been waiting for and it promises a lot for the victorious side. There are three points at stake, but a win for Nigeria will all but stamp the Super Eagles’ ticket to the Russia 2018 World Cup. A Super Eagles’ victory will take Nigeria to nine points, meaning the team only need one more win to cement their place in Russia.

Cameroun on the other hand needs to get at least a draw and beat Nigeria in the reverse fixture in Yaoundé to get within one point of their adversaries.

Yesterday at a meeting with the Super Eagles, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel reminded them of the significance of the game scheduled for the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Emmanuel, who promised to give the team $10,000 for every goal they score against Cameroun, redeemed the $30,000 he promised the Eagles for the three goals they scored against Algeria in the earlier match. He also promised to mobilise support for team to ensure total victory over the Indomitable Lions.

Udom told the players, “We are here because there is nothing as good as appreciating people, especially when the people are working for the general good. A love not expressed is a love wasted and so we are here to tell you that we appreciate what you are doing for Nigeria.

“I also want to tell you that no matter how wild a cat is, there is a place you will hold it and it will not be able to harm you. Go there and win the game for us.”

Speaking for the players, Skipper John Obi Mikel apologized to Nigerians for the loss to South Africa in the Nations Cup qualifier, assuring that they are here to make amends.

He said the team has been training hard for the game and would show Nigerians that they are hungry to be at the World Cup.Mikel, who debuted at the World Cup two years ago in Brrazil, revealed that the team are united in the quest to beat Cameroun, saying a win today would help them actualize that dream.

“I think the players know what is at stake here. The players always know what the task ahead is all about despite winning our opening games. We want to go to the World Cup. We have to win games and make sure we are focused all the time and also play well. The truth is you can’t play well in every game; a win is a win.

“We just want to win… it doesn’t matter how well we play. I am sure the players all know that is the important thing and I always speak to some of them and let them know how important it is to play for this country and how important it is to go to the World Cup and the Nations Cup. So on Friday we can hopefully get a win and move close to qualifying for the World Cup,” Mikel said.

Also speaking on the game, midfielder, Moses Simon admitted that Cameroun could be a tough nut to crack, adding, however, that every danger has a solution.

“We were not at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon when Cameroun won the trophy but we have respect for them as the African champions.“The important thing is that we must win and get the points that will take us closer to Russia,” he said.

Some of the players revealed that they have been conditioned by the NFF to put in their best and promised to reciprocate that gesture by getting at least four points from the two matches against Cameroun.

Apart from the payment of outstanding match bonuses and other entitlements, the players revealed that they are camped in a cozy, but secluded hotel, where they are allowed to relax after training sessions without disturbance by fans.

The players also have special security operatives guarding them in and outside the camp and training ground, as they get ready for the task of taming Cameroun. The match holds by 5.00 p.m.

Ijaw youths shut content board for not relocating IOCs offices

Ijaw Youth

• Bayelsa govt, IYC condemn killing of soldiers

Ijaw youths have shut down business activities at the operational headquarters of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

The youths, under the aegis of the Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC) worldwide led by the Chairman of the Central Zone, Comrade Tari Tori, said the action was, among others, a result of alleged refusal by the board to compel the international oil companies (IOCs) to relocate to the Niger Delta.

They accused the NCDMB of operating an empty office in Bayelsa without notable directors and top management staff while opening operating Brranch offices in Abuja and Lagos.

The youths demanded that the Federal Government should immediately mandate all IOCs to relocate to the region, and that the executive secretary of the board must operate from the office in Bayelsa, instead of Abuja as, according to them, the law of the board demands.

The IYC also wants the board to immediately cancel the two offices created in Abuja and Lagos and relocate all NCDMB offices to the Niger Delta. While addressing the angry youths, Tori alleged that the NCDMB contravened the Nigerian Content Act, section 71, sub-paragraph 3, which they claimed stipulates that the local content board has the powers to establish Brranch offices within oil and gas producing states.

Lamenting that the board opened offices in Abuja and Lagos but has failed to open Brranches in the oil producing states, the IYC said it would not allow the NCDMB to divide the people and their common interest. According to him, all directors and the executive secretary spend time everyday in other offices in Lagos and Abuja but come once in three months to the headquarters.

A member of the board who pleaded anonymity told The Guardian yesterday that it was surprising that while the youths were pleading for the relocation of multinational oil companies, they were harassing the few that were in the region.

The source said that indeed the NCDMB maintained a liaison office in Abuja that has only five members of staff, adding that the office was hired because of the relationship between the company, the petroleum ministry and other such agencies. He condemned the turn of events during the protest, noting that what the youths were doing was capable of scaring away would-be investors from the region.

“We are not even thinking of relocating. Where are we going to move our 17-storey headquarters which is already in the 12th floor? The ED already explained everything to the IYC worldwide leadership that visited him, why is the zonal body now overriding the national? “ he queried.

In another development, the IYC condemned the killing of four soldiers and a civilian by unknown G.unmen at Ekeremor Local Government of Bayelsa on Monday.

The G.unmen suspected to be militants had on Monday ambushed and killed four soldiers and a civilian along the waterways of Letugbene. A statement by its spokesman, Henry Iyallah, described the killing as sad, unfortunate and barbaric considering the fact that not too long ago, soldiers were Mur.derered at Ogbugbagbene community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

“We call on the security apparatus to investigate and unravel those behind these dastardly acts. These unfortunate killings do not reflect the position of the Ijaw people.

The IYC extends its sympathy to the military authorities and the families of the soldiers and civilian who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident while also expressing their cooperation to wipe out cr!minal elements from Ijaw communities.”

According to the group, it is not part of the culture of Ijaw people to take the lives of human beings for no just case. “These actions are anti-Ijaw interest and against the interest of the communities close to where the killings took place in Bayelsa State.”

The state government has also condemned the killing of the soldiers. In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Jonathan Obuebite expressed serious regret over the unfortunate incident, describing it as unwarranted, barbaric and totally unacceptable.

It was learnt that the militants overpowered the soldiers, seized their arms, moved them to a location in the creeks and shot them dead While one of the civilians, a boat driver was said to have escaped, the only survivor of the At-tack reportedly jumped into the water before he was shot by the hoodlums.

Military kills five Boko Haram commanders in joint operations

Nigerian Army spokesman Brigadier-General Sani Usman

The Nigerian Army said it has killed a number of top Boko Haram commanders during heavy B0mbardments of their hideouts in Sambisa forest, Borno State, within a week.

The forest covers 60, 000 square kilometres, comprising six council areas of Borno and parts of Yobe and Adamawa states in the Northeast. The Army said it recorded a number of breakthroughs with the B0mbardments through information it obtained about the location of the suspected leaders.

A statement signed by Army Spokesman, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, in Abuja said the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force in joint efforts have been carrying out heavy artillery B0mbardments and air interdictions on registered targets that have killed a large number of Boko Haram Terr0rists including some of the group’s key leaders.

The statement reads: “The Nigerian Army artillery using Multi-Barrel Rocket Launchers has lobbed many rockets over the suspected location the Terr0rists’ leaders are hiding. “Video clips obtained on battle damage assessment, shows clear success of the exercise. More details of successes achieved will be made available as the operation continues.

“The key Boko Haram Terr0rists neutralised within the week during the joint artillery and Nigerian Air Force air and Ar.med Special Forces Mobile Strike B0mbardments include: Abu Dujana, Man Tahiru (Deputy to Boko Haram Terr0rists group Hisba leader), Man Chari, Malam Abdullahi Abu Sa’ad and Goni Bamanga.‘’

He said while Tahiru, is number 166 on the military’s wanted list of Boko Haram commanders and Terr0rists, Chari is on number 28.“The Nigerian military would continue with the concerted onslaught on the reported Boko Haram Terr0rists’ location till they have been eliminated,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom (UK) has pledged to assist the Federal Government overcome the challenges of internal security threats posed by the Boko Haram insurgents.

It equally lauded the government for its continuous contributions to peacekeeping operations across the globe despite its internal security challenges, adding that Nigeria’s efforts in ensuring peace in other countries cannot go unnoticed.

British Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, stated this at the inauguration of the Abuja Memorial erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja.

The event was in honour of over 2000 fallen heroes from Nigeria who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars.In attendance were the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Abayomi Olonisakin, the representatives of the Service Chiefs and others.

He said: “In the struggle against tyranny in the 20th century, British did not fight alone and therefore we will never forget the contributions of millions of people across the world who fought in defence of liberty and lost their lives in the process.

“We remember the immense contributions of Nigerian Ar.med forces to peace keeping operations around the world despite the security threats here at home, it is commendable that Nigeria continue with its obligations on peace keeping operations.’’

Lions must fall, fans tell Mikel, others

Members of the Nigerian Football Supporters Club are mobilising support for the Super Eagles ahead of the crucial 2018 World Cup qualifying matches against Cameroun.

It is another day of great encounter between Nigeria and Cameroun, but the tension has reached fever pitch. However, despite the anxiety generated by the match, Nigerians believe the Coach Gernot Rohr-led team has enough fire power to tame the Indomitable Lions.

The Eagles’ fans across the country are in one voice and the song is that Cameroun must fall.Speaking with The Guardian at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer of Flying Sport Academy, Marshall Mbre urged the Eagles to do everything possible to beat Cameroun, adding that he would personally be in Uyo to cheer the team.

Mbre, who played football in Italy before returning to set up the Football Academy, said he was particularly happy for the inclusion of one of his players, John Ogu in the squad that will face Cameroun today.

“The players are young and the Super Eagles is a united family, so I see them beating Cameroun because they have the enthusiasm to win. Again, the defeat we suffered in the hands of South Africa during the 2019 Nations Cup qualifiers at the same stadium should be able to motivate the Eagles. At the moment, the Camerounian FA is having issues,” Mbre stated.

Also speaking, Coach Remi Amadi expressed confidence that the Eagles will fly high today, but warned the team to approach the game with caution. “The match is not going to be an easy one. Any team that wants a win must work hard for it. The Indomitable Lions are not push overs,” Amadi stated.

On his part, Seyi Adeboye said: “The coach should work seriously on the At-tack and every department of the team. If one player loses the ball, the others should be able to cover up. The team must work together to function well.”

Another fan, Humphrey Udebuna enthused: “The present players in the team should be able to get a win. There is need for a good goalkeeper who would replace the injured Akpeyi. We are hopeful and believe that the Eagles will get the three points at stake.”

Igbinedion lauds Obaseki over Edo fertilizer plant

Igbinedion

A former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion, yesterday commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for his inventiveness in facilitating the commissioning of the Edo Fertilizer Plant and Chemical Company Limited.

He particularly praised Obaseki for not allowing envy and jealousy to becloud his responsibility of providing better life for the Edo people. In a statement signed in Abuja, Igbinedion described the event as a welcome development, saying the people would benefit from the project through employment and related economic activities.

“I thank the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for visiting Edo State to commission the new line for BUA Cement Company in Okpella and the fertilizer plant in Auchi,” he said in the statement.

The Edo Fertilizer Plant, which was built by the Igbinedion administration, is being managed by WACOT Limited. However, the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through its Publicity Secretary recently condemned what it described as “the devious attitude and selfish political interest” of former governor Adams Oshiomhole.

The party said Oshiomhole had condemned the plant as scrap in his attempt to rubbish the past PDP-led government in the state.Managing Director of the Nigerian Sovereign Wealth Fund, Uche Orji, had said during a visit to the state in January 2017 when he accompanied the governor and investors to the plant that with the type of facilities it parades, the state had been missing opportunities with the fertilizer plant.

Igbinedion further added that when Oshiomhole became governor, the factory was 100 per cent ready, adding that he had invited former President OluseG.un Obasanjo to commission the plant after its successful test run.

Flood displaces over 110,000 people in Makurdi

A flooded community in Benue…

• Buhari directs NEMA to deploy aid to victims

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has said over 110,000 people in 24 communities including Makurdi, the state capital, have been displaced by flood in recent months.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Boniface Ortese, told newsmen in Makurdi on Wednesday that over 2,769 households were also affected. He explained that places affected included Achusa, Idye, Wurukum Market, Genabe, Industrial Layout, Demekpe, Wadata Market, Katungu, behind the Civil Service Commission, Agboughul-Wadata among others.

Meanwhile, President Mohammadu Buhari has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately mobilize personnel and resources to provide aid to victims.

A statement by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, last night said Buhari is closely monitoring the situation and is receiving regular updates on the scale of the disaster, as well as the Federal Government’s humanitarian response.”

The statement said the president has also extended his sympathies to the government and people of Benue State, and assured that the Federal Government will make available any assistance needed to enable the state and affected communities cope with and surmount the impact
of the flooding.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Joseph Utsev, has urged the Federal Government to include Benue among states to benefit from the N1.6 billion ecological intervention fund.

Utsev said since 2013, the state had not received any ecological assistance from the Federal Government. He added that if adequate budgetary provisions were made, many disasters may be mitigated since natural disasters could only be controlled.

The commissioner said that dredging the River Benue would provide a permanent solution to the recurring flood in the state. “Benue Government is looking for ways in which River Benue can be dredged; this is because by dredging the river, the water can be accommodated and thus, prevent future overflow.

However, a cross section of Makurdi residents accused the state government of doing little to protect the citizens from flood disaster over the years. A resident told NAN “since the 2012 flood disaster, government has done little to mitigate the situation apart from talking.”

James Udam, a resident of Idye Village told NAN that for over 20 years of his stay in the village, government has done nothing to protect residents despite their cries. “This is where we find ourselves in Benue. Government officials are rather happy that there is heavy flood disaster so as to get free funds and relief materials to divert.

“The same thing is again about to happen. The only thing the government has done so far is to make noise. Not a single culvert has been constructed to mitigate the situation since 2012,” he lamented

Also, Juliana Agbo, a resident of Achusa, told NAN that their situation was pathetic as they have no shelter. According to her, government was yet to open camp for IDPs in the state. Investigations revealed that government officials involved in emergency management are still awaiting the governor’s approval to open IDPs camps.

Brrazil on top as Chile, Argentina struggle

Brrazil's Philippe Coutinho (R) celeBrrates with teammate Willian after scoring against Ecuador during their 2018 World Cup football qualifier match in Porto Alegre, Brrazil, on August 31, 2017.Itamar AGUIAR / AFP

Philippe Coutinho shrugged off his transfer disappointment with a goal as Brrazil beat Ecuador to guarantee top spot in South America’s 2018 World Cup qualifying race on Thursday while Chile and Argentina stumbled once more.

Liverpool star Coutinho, who had seen his hopes of a dream move to Barcelona dashed earlier Thursday as the transfer window Sl.ammed shut with no agreement, produced a scintillating second-half display in a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in Porto Alegre.

The 25-year-old has not played for Liverpool this season, officially sidelined by a back pr0blem as the intrigue over a move to the Camp Nou swirled.

However Coutinho showed no sign of injury after coming on for Renato Augusto in the second half, enlivening the hosts after a goalless first 45 minutes before a restless home crowd in Porto Alegre.

New Barcelona signing Paulinho opened the scoring for Brrazil, lashing home from close range in the 69th minute after Willian’s corner.

Coutinho then fashioned Brrazil’s second, playing Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus into space behind the Ecuador back four with a lofted pass.

Jesus wrongfooted the covering Ecuador defence with a sublime flick and then headed into the path of Coutinho who finished emphatically.

The win was Brrazil’s ninth consecutive qualifying victory and gives the five-time World Cup winners an 11-point cushion with three games remaining, meaning they cannot now be overhauled at the top of the table.

The top four teams in South America’s round-r0bin competition qualify automatically for next year’s finals in Russia, with the fifth-placed team facing a play-off.

Down to the wire?
The scramble for automatic qualifying spots promises to go down to the wire, with only two points separating second-placed Colombia (25 points) and fifth-placed Argentina (23 points).

Paraguay also thrust themselves into contention with arguably the performance of the day on Thursday, a 3-0 away win over Chile in Santiago.

The defeat capped a miserable 24 hours for Chile’s unsettled Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez.

Like Coutinho, Sanchez had also seen his hopes of a transfer evaporate on Thursday, with a mooted move to Manchester City stalling.

Sanchez barely featured in a disappointing display by the Chileans, who fell behind after midfield talisman Arturo Vidal scored a spectacular headed own goal in the first half to put Paraguay ahead.

Further goals from Victor Caceres and Richard Ortiz sealed a deserved win for Paraguay, who moved up to sixth spot with 21 points just two points behind Argentina, who remain in fifth place.

Argentina meanwhile endured another frustrating outing after being held to a 0-0 draw by Uruguay in Montevideo.

Argentina dominated the early exchanges but their challenge fizzled out in a dreary second half display littered with fouls on both sides.

For Uruguay, the quicker-than-expected return of Luis Suarez — just two weeks after a knee injury — could not invigorate their At-tack.

Suarez authored one of Uruguay’s best chances late in the first half after Edinson Cavani pounced on an Argentina slip near halfway and passed to the Barcelona star.

Suarez looked up and attempted an audacious lob from 40 yards as Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero backpedalled, only for the ball to fly just over.

The draw means Uruguay remain in third place in the standings on 24 points, one behind second-placed Colombia, who were held to a 0-0 draw against already-eliminated Venezuela in San Cristobal.

Okorocha convenes security meeting, insists no casualty at market demolition

Governor Rochas Okorocha

• PDP, APGA, Labour party, others commiserate with victims

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday convened a security meeting at Government House, Owerri to chart a new cause for the protection of lives and property in the state.

At the meeting, presided over by the governor and attended by the state service chiefs and government officials, he restated that no one was killed during last week’s demolition of the Ekeukwu Owere Market.

He said the meeting became necessary to review the security situation in the state and chart the way forward. “I wish to reiterate that the relocation of Ekeukwu Market has been politicised by the Imo elite who were behind the false rumours because they think that would enhance their political advantage in the 2019 election.

“The Security Council also reaffirmed that nobody was killed in Ekeukwu during the demolition and those who are claiming that people were killed were merely carrying false rumours.

“If anyone knows of anybody who was killed during the demolition, they should show evidence of the victims,” he said. Okorocha added that the demolition of Ekeukwu would end cultism and Ar.med r0bbery, insisting there is no day that passes without an Ar.med r0bbery At-tack there.

He stressed that the exercise was a continuous one, saying, “New market will also be relocated. They have been given time within which to relocate. We must make Imo better.”

In a related development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Ararume Club, and the Labour Party have commiserated with the victims of the market demolition.

After their visit to the family of the late Somtochukwu Ibeanusi and some injured persons at the hospitals, the Nnamdi Anyaehie faction of the PDP in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Enyinna Onuegbu, directed that the party’s flag on 47, Okigwe Road, Owerri, to be flown at half mast for seven days.

He added that they would also hold a prayer session for God’s intervention in the affairs of the state. After visiting the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, the state chairman of the APGA, Peter Ezeobi, said the party visited the medical centre to commiserate with those who were injured and have been receiving treatment.

Labour Party chairman, Ikechukwu Akujiobi, said little Somtochukwu’s death came to them as a rude shock.Meanwhile, clashes between youths of Ohaji in Ohaji Council and Owerri Municipal, continued yesterday in spite of the intervention of the police.

While the Owerri youths were protesting the alleged engagement of the Ohaji youths in guarding the demolished Ekeukwu Market, the Ohaji youths were protesting the alleged killing of two of their colleagues. The state Police Command, however, deployed officers to strategic location to curb escalation of the crisis.

Kayode Fayemi

Fayemi, in a goodwill message signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, said the festival also offers another opportunity for sober reflection, soul-searching and spiritual renewal which Allah demands from the faithful.

The minister, who urged Nigerians to continue to pray and work for peace and unity in the country, also implored the Muslim faithful and adherents of other faiths to always demonstrate love and understanding towards one another.

(Dr.) Alfred Adewale Martins, and the Deputy Chief Missioner of Nasrul-Lahi-L-Fatih Society (NASFAT) World Headquarters, Lagos, Imam Morufu Onike Abdul-Azeez, have congratulated the Muslim brethren as they celeBrrate this year’s festival.

Martins, who called on them to pray for Nigeria, especially now that the country is faced with a lot of challenges, said: “We rejoice with them because whoever is rejoicing, we also must rejoice too because we all belong to the same one God and Father.”

He also used the occasion to call on government to address the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.Abdul-Azeez, who enjoined Muslim brothers and sisters to emulate Prophet IBrrahim, said: “If we give the government all the necessary supports, our dear country Nigeria could eventually be the toast of other nations.”

Kogi workers, doctors reject 50% pay cut

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello

• Labour says it will be regarded as ‘Sallah gift’
• Urges gov to account for bailout and Paris Club funds

The Kogi State Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and Public Sector Joint Negotiation Council (PSJNC) have rejected the 50 per cent salary cut proposed by the state government on account of lean resources.

The organised labour, in a bulletin issued yesterday, said any payment short of 100 per cent would be regarded as a ‘Sallah gift’ to workers. “This is to inform all workers that government is at it again, as it is proposing 50 per cent salary payment for the month of July after collecting the bailout fund, first and second tranche of London Paris Club refund and the normal monthly allocations.

“We hereby demand for an explanation as to how government arrived at N3.1 billion wage, even when reasonable number‎ of workers have not been paid for several months.

“As workers, it would be better to take this stance today and safe tomorrow, as any attempt to take half salar‎y shall be the beginning of percentage salary payment in Kogi State. We wish our members a happy Sallah in advance even though on empty stomach,” the statement said.

In the same vein, the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Kogi State Chapter has rejected the payment of 50 per cent salary to its members. In a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Godwin Tijani and made available to newsmen yesterday, the NMA stated that the association was not invited to the meeting held between the state government and labour leaders where it was agreed that 50 per cent would be paid to workers.

He said: “We only saw the news in the media this morning which we took with a pinch of salt but by yesterday, many of our members were getting alert confirming the payment of 50 per cent of their salaries. Kogi doctors are not happy with that decision.

“As a noble and an understanding association, we expected the government to notify us of this shortfalls and not be taken by surprise.”He, therefore, appealed to doctors in the state to remain calm without being disillusioned by that discrimination adding that they should go about their normal activities as efforts are being made to correct the defects in their salaries.

Ressmann, at The Guardian, seeks sustainable business model for Nigerian print media

PHOTO: FEMI ADEBESIN-KUTI

The Executive Director of World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) for Africa and Europe, Ralf Ressmann, yesterday advised print media organisations to adopt sustainable business models, digital journalism and press freedom to secure their future.

He stated this during his visit to The Guardian’s Rutam House in Lagos. WAN-IFRA, which comprises an advisory board of publishers from Africa, provides press freedom and media development programmes across the world.

His words: “We support the media industry in the digital transformation process because we strongly believe that without sustainable business model, digital journalism, and press freedom newspaper business cannot survive.

“We have a Digital Africa Media Conference, being part of a series we do worldwide. We are on our way to growing the board by having representative publishers in Nigeria. We discuss the future opportunities for the industry and this was how the conference came about last year.”

Ressmann added that his visit was to get firsthand information on some of the challenges facing the print media in the country and advised that media in Nigeria should adopt the digital platform, as the world was gradually moving towards that direction.

He also noted that media revenue was dwindling due to challenges of social media and other sources like Google, which does more than search engine to actually broadcasting news and Facebook.Speaking, Executive Editor of The Guardian, ABrraham Ogbodo, said the company was in partnership with Ventra Media, a digital media platform, to tackle some of the challenges confronting the industry.

“We try to create a balance between the digital and traditional media, as they both appeal to different age groups. The issue of press freedom is universal,” he said.

Sustainability of print media across the globe, Ressmann said, was being Thre.atened because most media outfits recorded losses in their print circulation as experienced in his organisation.

“And that is why we try to support them. We cannot get the same revenue online as it used to be in print and on mobile. It’s even getting worse in Europe.

“We see the word Frienemies as regards Google and Facebook in our conferences very often because they have a faster and wider reach. “On the other hand, 90 per cent of the yearly growth in digital advertising is taken away by Google and Facebook. The whole digital transformation system is going slowly, but steadily,” he added.

Ajimobi accuses opposition of inciting Olubadan against government

Abiola Ajimobi, Governor of Oyo State

• Kingmakers elect new Akarigbo of Remoland

Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has accused some politicians in the state of inciting the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji against government policy that reviewed the 1959 Olubadan declaration and crowning of 21 monarchs.

The governor who spoke yesterday at the commissioning of a road network in Ibadan said he knew Oba Adetunji as a good father of everybody in the town but wondered why some politicians would want to pitch him against the government.

He noted that his government was not the first to have tinkered with Ibadan kingship system, disclosing that it was Governor Mac Gregor of the colonial days that elevated Olubadan status from Baale to that of a monarch in 1930.

The governor said the review of Olubadan declaration was done in conjunction with members of Olubadan-in-council, Ibadan elders and Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes.

Ajimobi who spoke in the presence of the newly crowned monarchs that graced the occasion said, “We know that Kabiyesi Olubadan is being instigated against the government by some politicians we have defeated several times and we shall defeat them again. Our royal father is the father of Ibadanland and the governor is the father of Oyo State. I hope we shall not be pushed to the walls to exercise our power as government. Abiola Ajimobi can be insulted without qualms, but nobody in this state can insult the office of the governor and expect to go scot-free.

“You can defend your position and say nobody should rise above you but you cannot prevent others from being recognised under you. Those who are instigating Olubadan against us should stop hiding under the traditional institution to fight political battles.’’

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, Oba Lekan BaloG.un said the people of Ibadan would continue to be grateful to the governor for many developmental projects his government had initiated and completed.

In another development, Prince Adewale Babatunde Ajayi, a Chartered Accountant and legal practitioner has been elected as the new Akarigbo of Remoland through an open ballot held among the seven kingmakers at the Akarigbo’s palace, Sagamu.

Among the 19 nominees were three Professors, Gabriel OG.unmola, Adewale Solarin, the President of African Mathematical Union and the immediate past Director-General of National Mathematics Centre, Abuja and Tunde OG.unsanwo.

The election, supervised by the Secretary of the Sagamu Local Government, Otunba Adewale Fakoya, made Ajayi victorious with five votes while OG.unmola had two votes and the other 17 nominees had no vote. His name would be forwarded to the state government.

Landlords in Isoko, community disagree over MoU with Agip

Some landlords, whose land hosts the Agip Oil exploration in Oleh, Isoko South Local Council Area of Delta State, have disagreed with the Community Development Committee (CDC) over a restraining order in the memorandum of understanding with the company.

In a statement, counsel to the landlords, Richard Akpoghalino, said: “The current Chairman of the CDC, Johnson Ossoh, who was appointed by the Odiologbo of Oleh community has for over a decade, turned his back against members of the nine families.”

Akpoghalino stressed that AGIP pipelines run across the land of 37 families in Oleh, adding that nobody knows to whom the annual benefit from the pipelines should be paid.

According to the statement, land in Oleh community is not owned by the community, but by the individual families through inheritance. They urged the Ministry of Environment to correct the MoU, which had restrained them from dealing directly with the oil company.

The statement reads: “Under the Isoko native laws and customs, as applicable to Oleh community, every transaction bordering on land must require the consent of the head of the family to remain valid.

“This age-long respected tradition is gradually being swept under the carpet upon the discovery of crude oil and gas by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) on the farmlands belonging to the nine families in Oleh community.”

The statement further explained that in some other communities where crude oil and gas had been discovered in Isoko, the landowners play a vital role and have their benefits in the drilling activities clearly spelt out in the MoU.

The nine landlords explained that some community leaders have been frustrating their efforts to reflect the new leadership with the Agip Oil in Okpai Gas plant.

According to them, Agip told them that they only recognised the CDC and not individual landowners. But the CDC chairman, Ossoh explained that that contrary to the landlords’ claims, the contents of the MoU have been duly complied with.

He said it was the overzealousness among the families of the nine landlords that was responsible for the altercations. To justify their relevance, the aggrieved nine said: “A faction of the nine landlords sometime in 2016, registered their displeasure and demanded that the Ossoh-led faction should step down as chairman of the CDC, having occupied the position for more than a decade.”The statement further explained that it was the conflict at that time that led to the arrest of some factional members of the committee by the police.

Cameroon must take four points out of six, says Broos

Hugo Broos. PHOTO: AFP

Cameroon’s coach, Hugo Broos admits their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign is doomed if they do not take at least four points off Nigeria in back-to-back clashes, reports AFP.

The Group B rivals meet in southeastern Nigerian city, Uyo today and in Camerounian capital, Yaounde three days later. Nigeria top the African “group of death” with six points after two rounds, African champions Cameroun have two and Zambia and Algeria one.

“If we still want to have a chance of qualifying, we must take at least four points off Nigeria,” the Belgian told reporters. “Should we fail to achieve that target, I do not think it will be possible to qualify for Russia.”

Broos is hoping for an away draw and a home victory — results that would reduce the gap between the countries to one point. The remaining two qualifying rounds are scheduled for October and November with only the five group winners in Africa securing places at the global football showcase.
“My players need little or no reminding of how important the matches against Cameroon are,” said Germany-born Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr.

While Nigeria were fast out of the blocks late last year to defeat Zambia and Algeria, Cameroun did well to draw in Algeria only to be held at home by Zambia.

Bottom-of-the-table Algeria dumped midfielder Sofiane Feghouli, a recent Galatasaray signing from West Ham United, for a must-win showdown with Zambia in Lusaka tomorrow.

Algeria, Cameroun and Nigeria qualified for the 2010 and 2014 World Cup tournaments, but only one of the three countries can make it to Russia.
Broos believes his side can cope without some of their key At-tackers against Nigeria.

Cameroon At-tackers Clinton N’Jie and Karl Toko Ekambi have both been ruled out of the two matches due to injures. However, Broos promised that his side will give the Super Eagles of Nigeria a tough task when speaking on the Independent.“I know how it is when a coach loses his key players to injury, especially when there are crucial matches,” Broos said.

“Clinton is one of our best performers, same thing with Karl, but we should also know that injury is part of the game.“Their injuries can’t deter us because we have capable replacements.”The Belgian tactician is likely to look to Benjamin Moukandjo, Vincent Aboubakar and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting against Nigeria.

Tsanni said: “While wishing all a joyous celeBrration, it remains worrisome that the socio-economic situation of Nigeria is not improving as fast as expected. Consequently, there is increasing trust deficit between the leaders and the led.

OG.un APGA, group back Obiano, APC lawmaker for guber polls

Governor Willie Obiano

OG.un State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has declared total support for the national leadership of the party led by its chairman Dr. Victor Ike Oye. It has also backed AnamBrra State Governor Willie Obiano’s reelection bid at the November 18, 2017 poll.

Also in OG.un State, supporters of Governor Ibikunle Amosun group under the aegis of League of National Patriots (LNP) have endorsed the gubernatorial aspiration of House of Representatives member, Hon. Adekunle Abdukabir Akinlade, popularly known as Triple A, on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC).

APGA, in a statement by its chairman, Mr. Augustine Coker and publicity secretary, Mr. Kola OG.unyinka, in Abeokuta, also dissociated themselves from a faction of the party led by Martin Agbasso, which they described as illegal, “arising from the unconstitutional takeover of power.”

The party vowed to reject any attempt by any individual to impose any form of change on them without following the party’s constitution: “We also condemn in totality any form of political brigandage and gangsterism that are planning to overthrow, unconstitutionally, an authority that was properly elected in 2015 national convention of the party in Akwa.”

At press conference in Abeokuta, the spokesperson of the group in OG.un, Comrade Hassan Omotayo Isaka, stated that their choice became necessary to ensure that the state was in safe hands after Amosun’s administration.

His words: “Triple A has demonstrated his visionary quality in his #3030 promise which according him is designed to give 30 per cent of his appointments to youths under the age of 30 years. We are therefore leaving no stone unturned to mobilize a minimum of one million youth across OG.un State to support this great youngman.

“We are all aware of the ongoing effort by some individuals from Lagos to Hi.jack the politics of OG.un towards the 2019 general elections using their money. This as far as we concerned are clear plots to add OG.un to their already existing hegemony. We want to assure them that OG.un State is not for sale and not for the highest bidder and our people cannot be bought by money. When the time is ripe, we shall demonstrate our capacity to take our destiny into our hands to ensure that only the candidate we can trust and identify with in APC takes over from Senator Amosun.”

The group, therefore, called on the people of Yewa land to fully grab this historic opportunity to give the people of the state the candidate that possesses the true character and potentials needed to “consolidate on the good work of the leader and father of modern the state, Senator Amosun for fairness, justice and equity which rightly zoned the next governorship ticket to Yewa land.”

LNP’s founder and national coordinator, Mallam Abdulkareem Ikharo, noted that “this period is indeed time to test the resolve and oneness of the Yewa people.”

He urged them to unite and ensure the right candidate that truly has the love of the state is given this historic opportunity and be wary of the “desperate antics of moneybags who are bent on Hi.jacking OG.un State and the potentials of its commerce and industry to meet their personal interest at the expense of the people.”

The group added that it has commenced voluntary and self-financed strategies to sensitize the youth to key into the drive to make the legislator the next governor in 2019.

‘Eagles need scientific approach to cage African champions’

Nigeria has won 11 in 19 previous encounters with Cameroun, while the Lions won four times and four matches drawn.

As Super Eagles clash with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun in the 2018 World Cup qualifier today in Uyo, former Green Eagles winger, Adegoke Adelabu has expressed concern about the tactical ability of the team being assembled by Gernot Rohr.

“I know we have individual players who could put up sporadic good performances, but their cognitive network as a team is the issue,” Adelabu told The Guardian yesterday. “Many times I do not see what is called ‘marriage of players’ on the field of play. I mean a situation where players compliment one another tactically. Apart from just passing the ball to each other normally, I hardly see any uniqueness in our ball reception and transition based on field positions. I think the Coach will do something about all these laxities in our play.”

Nigeria has won 11 in 19 previous encounters with Cameroun, while the Lions won four times and four matches drawn. But the Camerounians always have a way of spoiling the party for Nigeria at big occasions, having stopped the Eagles in three final matches of the Africa Cup of Nations including the Ghana/Nigeria 2000, and the qualifiers for Italia ’90 FIFA World Cup.

However, Adelabu, a sport scientist, is of the view that today’s match in Uyo should go the way of the Super Eagles. “We have to win to be comfortable at the top of the table, but the Indomitable Lions will surely put up a good fight. I see no reason why the Super Eagles would not defeat them.

He noted that the Eagles must approach the game differently saying: “I observed that most of our players produce the same standard of performances over the years. Their approach to the game is almost predictable until the opponents score against us. We need to learn to interpret the game very well. Even in a situation where we had advance knowledge of the opponents by watching the videos of their matches, we still approach the game at our convenience. Hardly do you see our team repeat particular set pieces consistently at various field positions to determine its effectiveness.

“Take for instance, if we watch a video of a game played by Cameroun, may be they drew or lost the game, we need to look at the pressure points and how the opponent broke down their defence. The style of their set pieces, their effectiveness and most importantly, the personality of the major players generating the pressure.

These are some of the latent tactical details that must be considered in choosing our team.“Sincerely, I think it is unacceptable for any group of people to use the national team as a marketing ground for players. We need to rest players who have outlived their usefulness. Football has gone scientific. It has nothing to do with names, but the ability to process technical and tactical information as quickly as possible to the advantage of your team.”

Adelabu warned the Super Eagles to be “careful because the Indomitable Lions will be looking for spot kicks as early as possible during the game. Eagles should play wide to open up the midfield and try as many pull outs as possible. Every game has it own standard, hence, the Super Eagles should determine how they want to approach the game and make sure they enforce that pattern on the Camerounians.”

In Ondo, inherited salary burden heats up polity

Chief Rotimi Akeredolu

Members of Ondo State workforce are on the warpath with the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, over government decision not to devote the entire money from the Paris Club refund to paying salaries owed by the previous administration of Dr. OluseG.un Mimiko.

The once cordial relationship between the state workforce and the government of governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State that was engendered by the pledge to pay six-month backlog of salaries inherited from the immediate past administration of Dr. OluseG.un Mimiko, is gradually turning sour.

After the receipt of N7.6 billion Paris Club refund by the state government few weeks ago, the expectant workers, who are still owed salary arrears from September 2016 to January 2017, had expected payment of outstanding arrears as promised by Akeredolu.

But the governor informed the labour unions that 75 percent of the fund, which is N5.7 billion, would not be enough to offset all the outstanding salary and pensions for September 2016, thereby suggesting grade level and fractional payment of 80 percent for September 2016, which the unions rejected.

The unions under the auspices of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), urged the government to source for the estimated balance of N500 million to pay the workers their full salary. But the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale, accused the union leaders of deceiving their members and misrepresenting the decision they took together with the government concerning the payment formula.

According to Odebowale who was piqued by the amount of opposition the position of the union leaders has generated against the government, “It is the height of irresponsibility, therefore, to tell lies on a fact released without any prompting. Keen watchers of events of this administration, since inception, should see through this lie.”

Odebowale disclaimed the N7.6 billion figure which the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. SeG.un Ajiboye officially declared six weeks ago, saying “The Paris Club refund accruable to Ondo State is N6.38 billion (Net) and not N7.6 billion as claimed. This fact was made known to the representatives of the union at a public forum.”

He disclosed that that some states in the federation only allocated 50 percent of the total refund to offset salaries and the remaining 50 percent for capital projects whereas, “Ondo State has agreed to allocate 75 percent of the total sum to pay pensioners in full, offset part of the gratuities owed retirees, release subventions to institutions and parastatals and to pay 80 percent of the September 2016 salary.

“The remaining 25 percent is for capital projects. It is rather disturbing to note that those who claim to serve the public will insist that the government should reserve nothing for the generality of the people who constitute over 95 percent of the populace. The reference to the July salary paid to Local Government workers appears disingenuous.”

The governor’s aide stressed that “Selfless union leaders owe their members a duty to always speak the truth and to act in their best interest at all times. Local government workers are not even in a position to demand full payment of September 2016 salary.

“There has been a consistent shortfall in the allocations released to the Local Governments since May, 2017. The state government received 67 percent (N4.467 billion) of the refund while the councils got 33 percent (N2.169 billion). The July 2017 salary was paid with this fund, not September 2016 salary, as mischievously peddled.”

He, however, noted that it is “pr0bably unnecessary to dignify those who over assume their relevance that their support secured the resounding victory for the governor. While we will continue to acknowledge the unalloyed support of the workers in the state, we must hasten to debunk this snide suggestion.

“The good people of this state voted for the realistic manifesto presented. We promised that their welfare would be the directive principle of state policy under our watch. The allegiance of this government is to them and not a select few. No worker should be afraid of persecution in this dispensation. No one will, however, enjoy unmerited privileges.

“No amount of blackmail can stampede this administration to take decisions which will be inimical to the interests of the generality of the people who are not in the employ of the government.”

Odebowale who reiterated the commitment of the administration to the welfare of the workers, by saying “The deserving will be promoted,” alleged that the union leaders were responsible for the pr0blems, which the workers are presently facing in the state.

“Those who are just waking up to their mandate as union leaders must be asked to explain their roles in the pauperization of the mass of workers in the not too distant past. They should be able to tell workers how their affairs got to this sorry state.”

In reaction to this and the subsequent payment of the rejected 80 percent by the office of the Accountant-General, the union leaders: Mrs. Bose Daramola (NLC), Sola Ekundayo (TUC) and Adeleye Oluwole (JNC), convened an emergency meeting to express their dissatisfaction over the “unilateral decision.”

The unions accused the governor of forcefully introducing percentage and fractional salary payment into the state, insisting that workers would not accept anything less than their full salary for September 2016.Rising from the emergency meeting, the affiliate unions said despite their efforts to dissuade Akeredolu against percentage payment like a neighbouring state, the state government still directed the Accountant-General to start paying 80 percent.

The unionists noted that meetings held with some government’s representatives and the governor himself only agreed on the utilization of the second tranche of the 75 percent of the debt refund for workers on grade levels one to 14.They affirmed that the entire state workers appraised the 80 percent payment made to them as a gift and not salary until government made full payment of the September 2016 salary arrears adding that the government’s decision was not an agreement with the organised labour.

They said it was too authoritarian, erroneous and elementary for any political appointee to be claiming that the present administration did not owe workers, adding that it was well known that state governors statutorily inherited both assets and liabilities of their predecessors.

According to them, “If Governor Akeredolu’s administration can spend money left in the account by his predecessor, he should also pay in full, the debt and salaries owed by Mimiko’s government whenever funds are available instead of using his aides to At-tack labour unions. We will do everything to reject introduction of percentage salary in Ondo State, no matter of government propaganda to blackmail us.”

The union leaders expressed disappointment over the attitude of the State Head of Service, Mr Toyin Akinkuotu, saying he was not doing enough to protect the interest of Ondo State workers under the present administration. They also berated Odebowale for using what they called “unprinted names and unguided statements” against indigenes of the state and labour leaders warning that the labour movement would be forced to put in the public domain, damaging information about the governor’s aide.

The union leaders, who reminded the SSA that government is a continuum, advised Akeredolu to call him to order, emphasizing that his recent utterances showed clearly that the present administration would not be worker-friendly.While noting that the Paris debt refund, which Akeredolu’s administration claimed could not be used to pay salary and pension in full, was a dividend of his predecessors, they warned political appointees to always remember that running a government is not a personal or private business, hence the need for those in the helm of affairs to obey the extant laws of the civil service.

The aggrieved workers added that elected and appointed political office holders only hold offices in trust for indigenes, as “no worker would accept gradual introduction of percentage or fractional salary in the state irrespective of political blackmail or propaganda by the Akeredolu administration.”
